The marriage of Sara Carbonero and Iker Casillas has come to an end. The announcement was made by the journalist and the goalkeeper on social media. They had been together for eleven years and have two children, Martin and Lucas, aged seven and four. The decision was “very well thought out” and “amicably” made.
Rumors have been circulating about the split between Sara Carbonero and Iker Casillas for several weeks. Last February, the journalist was hospitalized with new complications due to ovarian cancer. It is recalled that Carbonero was diagnosed a few days after the soccer player had a heart attack in May 2019.
Now the couple have confirmed their breakup on social media with a photo of the two that is accompanied by a statement. “Our priority is to share the well-being and education of our children out of affection and commitment and to protect them so that they grow up with stability and health,” they write. Carbonero and Casillas are parents of Martin and Lucas, who grew up in Porto, where the family lived for several years – when the athlete signed a contract with the Futebol Clube de Porto.
Sara Carbonero and Iker Casillas have always shared the relationship very humbly. They married in 2016 in a discreet ceremony in Madrid with a notary and the presence of family and close friends. The couple became particularly popular when they both faced serious health problems – the goalkeeper suffered a heart attack and shortly after the woman was diagnosed with ovarian cancer.
Sources close to the couple revealed to El País that the reason for the split was related to “problems of living together”. Everything that has happened in the past few years has left dire consequences in the relationship. They reportedly tried to resume the marriage for some time, but to no avail. “Respect, affection and friendship will always remain,” the couple wrote in the publication.
The journalist and the footballer close with a request: “With these words we ask you to respect our intimacy in this moment of change. These will be the only public words we will share now and in the future. “
Iker Casillas reportedly confessed to a paparazzi a few months ago that he may not have been around enough for Sara Carbonero during difficult times like chemotherapy for ovarian cancer. Shortly afterwards, the statement was contradicted by the couple’s team.
However, the Spanish press has announced that the couple have always had separate bank accounts and that they do not own any property together. The divorce process should therefore be simplified. Casillas’ assets are € 350 million including real estate, property and investments. Sara Carbonero will have a more modest legacy – 1.1 million euros – mainly from Recuerdos de Sudáfrica SL
The couple returned to Madrid last summer after Casillas finished his professional career in football. Now he’s dedicated to founding Real Madrid. Sara Carbonero returned to Rádio Marca where she started her career as a journalist to present an interview program on Tuesdays and Thursdays. It is also dedicated to his fashion brand Slow Love.
