The PSP’s Lisbon Metropolitan Command has arrested a 20-year-old man on suspicion of animal abuse. The police were alerted by a witness that the suspect was “constantly and violently” beating the animal. Authorities went “to witness the systematic aggression” and the man replied that he had done it “as a corrective measure”.
In a note entitled “Arrested in Flagrante for mistreatment of animals,” the PSP’s Metropolitan Command of Lisbon stated that it was on March 9 at 5:30 pm by the Police Division of Oeiras in the Association of Parishes Linda-a-Velha and Cruz Quebrada-Dafundo from Algés arrested “a 20-year-old man on suspicion of the crime of mistreating pets”.
“The police was informed by a witness that a man in the back yard of his apartment had aggressively and violently attacked a captured dog with a stick and a rubber band. With the information gathered, the police quickly moved to the scene and experienced the aggression that systematically appeared in the animal’s head. The man was immediately asked to stop the attacks, to which the suspect replied that he was doing this as a corrective measure, ”a statement sent to the press said.
The PSP announced that the suspect was arrested “as a witness to the current and unlawful aggression against the animal” and “he was constituted as a defendant, subject to an identity and residence period pending notification of the judicial authorities”.
The animal, a “Bull Terrier dog, was collected by the local authority as determined by the city veterinarian and will remain at the city kennel for evaluation and subsequent judicial decision.”
According to the statement sent to the press, three other dogs were found in the suspect’s home “which appear to be in good health with no visible signs of violence” and are “being assessed by the city veterinarian for their health conditions”.
