The largest literary project by Gonçalo M. Tavares, O Bairro, a series of ten books, was published in a single volume in France and welcomed by critics who classified the Portuguese writer as “Gaudí of the language”.
According to Relógio d’Água, the publisher that currently publishes the work of Gonçalo M. Tavares and is reissuing the books in this series, the French edition has a foreword by Mathias Énard, “one of the most important French writers who writes whoever wants to like Saramago also beat Gonçalo M. Tavares ”.
This volume, which was published under the title Le Quartier, Les Messieurs (“The neighborhood, the gentlemen”, in direct translation), brings together the ten titles of the “O Bairro” collection, each of which corresponds to a “gentleman” of the same name by a great writer are dedicated to: Mr. Valéry (winner of the Branquinho da Fonseca Prize), Mr. Henri, Mr. Brecht, Mr. Juarroz, Mr. Kraus, Mr. Calvino, Mr. Walser, Mr. Breton, Mr. Swedenborg and Mr. Eliot.
In the newspaper L’Observateur, Didier Jacob Gonçalo M. Tavares considered the “Gaudí of language” and added about O Bairro: “The great Portuguese writer has worked for twenty years in this unique cathedral, where the only cult is literature. and with surprising humor, humorous erudition and incomparable sweetness ”.
For Gladys Marivat from Le Monde des Livres, Gonçalo M. Tavares is the “child prodigy of the Portuguese letters” and “his neighborhood” is “one of the rare places we can still travel due to the coronavirus”.

Gonçalo M. Tavares, born in 1970, is a Portuguese writer and university professor whose first work was published in 2001.
Known for the originality of his creative projects, the author has another series before O Bairro called O Reino, which consists of four books.
Gonçalo M. Tavares has been recognized and recognized by international critics. Many of his works have been translated into more than 50 countries and adapted to various projects such as plays, artistic objects, art videos or operas.
Many of his books have already been published in France, where he has received some of the most important prizes, such as the Prix du Meilleur Livre Étranger, previously awarded to authors such as Elias Canetti, Robert Musil, Orhan Pamuk, John Updike, Philip Roth and Gabriel García Márquez amongst other things.
Gonçalo M. Tavares’ books were originally published by Caminho but are now edited by Relógio d’Água. Mr Walser and Mr Brecht have already been published, to which Mr Swedenborg will soon be added, followed by other titles.
