The owner of an illegal retirement home in Torres Novas who was arrested by Leiria Criminal Police on Friday is being held in custody, according to a police source.
The 41-year-old woman is suspected of guilty of two death-aggravated ill-treatment crimes, a crime of desecration of a corpse and two ill-treatment crimes committed in the Torres Novas region of Santarém district, Leiria Judicial Police (PJ ) in a press release.
After the woman was arrested on Friday by the Leiria PFY, she was present that Saturday at the examining magistrate at Tomar Court, who issued the coercive preventive measure for detention, a police source told Lusa.
Following the same advice from the PFY, the defendant rented a house that she had adapted for the guest residence, in which she received four elderly women who charged a fixed monthly fee and agreed to provide the care they were entitled to.
“As a result of the mistreatment, two of the elderly women died and the body of one of them was hidden indefinitely without the accused reporting the death to the relevant authorities or family members. Says PJ.
