They love what they do but can barely pay the bills. Exhausted, at a time when the Covid-19 pandemic was putting the healthcare system under immense pressure, Portuguese nurses are fighting against fatigue, but must also be able to afford the costs at the end of the month.

The Reuters agency followed the daily routine of Inês Lopes, a nurse who takes care of patients with Covid-19 during the night shift in the intensive care unit of the Hospital de São José in Lisbon.
