UMA was born, a new platform for creating and programming multi-handed performing arts

During their first detention, Joana Magalhães, Mafalda Lencastre and Maria Inês Marques used the forced cessation of cultural activities in order to think about “common dissatisfactions” without pressure and without rushing. This includes “taking up research time, looking for languages and practices that respond to current urgencies, and creating alternatives to the institutional context”. This productive year, for better or for worse, in terms of job applications, public discussions, protests and solidarity actions in the cultural sector “ultimately underscored the need to share concerns”. Out of this exchange and the “desire to make it happen and see”, the three creators associated with the performing arts founded UMA, a platform based in Porto dedicated to the research, creation and programming of collaborative, multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary topics, frontier projects .
