So that we don’t always talk about the same things (2) | opinion

Shortly after the fall and execution of Ceausescu, I took part in an international delegation that visited Romania in 1990. The events of Christmas Day 1989 were still in the dark and it was not clear what had happened at Ceausescu’s puppet trial and Mrs. Elena and her wife’s immediate execution by shooting at a barracks in Targoviste, where they had been arrested after fleeing Bucharest. There has also been much controversy over the role of the Securitate political police in the overthrow of the regime, as well as the Soviets, whom Ceausescu accused in the puppet trial of what happened to him. There was also an open discussion about the future of Securitate in a regime that appeared to be democratic.
