Marcelino da Mata died of Covid-19 on Thursday at the age of 80. The news ignored the news. Most Portuguese have no idea who Marcelino da Mata was. There is a certain form of poverty affecting this country – the poverty of our historical memories, which is too selective and formatted, and which leads to widespread ignorance when we talk about facts or people that do not fit the official historiography of the regime. Marcelino da Mata was placed outside the history of Portuguese democracy and, for this reason, died without his name and extraordinary life being incorporated into collective memory.
