Bobby Lamantia Awarded 2011 McCrady Brothers Football Scholarship at Mark Morris High School
Mark Morris High School senior Bobby Lamantia was awarded the McCrady Brothers Football Scholarship at the team’s postseason award ceremony on November 20.
The McCrady award is made annually to a football letter winner who has excelled in the classroom and also serves as a student leader at Mark Morris. Lamantia started 18 straight games at center for the Monarchs during his junior and senior years. He earned two varsity letters and was a team captain in 2011.
“Bobby is a nice young man and good example of what hard work can get you. He was put in to the starting lineup his junior year and ran with it,” Mark Morris Head Football Coach Shawn Perkins said.
The $1,000 college scholarship is funded by Mark and Theresa McCrady and Mark’s parents, Roy and Colleen McCrady.
“Our family started this scholarship in 2007 after our sons Seth and Kyle had both completed their four-year high school football careers at Mark Morris,” Mark McCrady said. “The high school football experience gave our sons valuable life lessons in teamwork and taught them how to stay focused on goals they have set.”
The McCrady scholarship is managed by the Mark Morris Foundation. The independent, nonprofit organization accepts tax-deductible donations for the benefit of MM students ― for scholarship programs and projects at the school. Recently the MM Foundation raised over $23,000 to replace the sign at the 15th Avenue entry to the school with a new electronic sign.
“The Foundation appreciates the dedication of McCradys for funding this scholarship to benefit outstanding students like Bobby. Our goal is to identify alumni and supporters to help develop and fund other scholarship opportunities at Mark Morris,” said Foundation President Jackie (Kelly) Evans (class of 1960).

Jungle Technology: Local computer tech offers services for unemployed.
Battle Ground, WA.
Jungle Technology, a north Clark County computer repair service, is offering free or low priced services to their local unemployed neighbors. What is normally handled as an hourly service is being offered for free in their Battle Ground office or for only $20 for the mobile service completed in your home.
Unfortunately, due to fuel costs, Jungle Technology is unable to offer mobile services for free. Owner Alex Johnson says, “It’s our desire to help those who are falling on bad times, understanding how hard it can be and that a working computer system can be the difference between getting a job or not with most companies requiring electronic resumes and applications.”
While not all services can be covered, Jungle Technology can provide up to two hours of service which, according to Johnson, is generally enough time to get you up and running if you get a virus. If more services are needed, a discount program has been setup to help.
Jungle Technology provides services to Clark or Cowlitz County residents receiving Washington state benefits, and proof of benefits will be required. Also service is completed on a first come, first served basis with only 4 appointments per week. “We are sorry we cannot help more than 4 families per week,” states Johnson, “but we are a small business with only 1 technician performing services. We are a family business and will work to support those families in need this holiday season and we will strive keep this going as long as people need our support.”
A special number has been set aside that will go to a message machine. Appointments will be scheduled Mondays or until full, for the following Tuesday through Friday. The first four callers will be contacted and scheduled for that week. Callers who don’t hear back should try again the next week. Calls for the week will start at 9AM on Mondays. Interested unemployed persons can call
(360) 836-0208.
Details are available online at
www.jungletechnology.com/unemployed. Jungle Technology can be contacted for regular computer services at (360) 313-6483 in Clark county and (360) 232-1107 in Cowlitz county and on the web at:

‘When Logging Was Logging’ Now Available at the Appelo Archives Center
The Appelo Archives Center has received its long anticipated shipment of their latest book, When Logging Was Logging, 100 years of Big Timber in SW Washington. With both historic black and white photos of early 20th century logging and modern logging shots in color, the book has been very well received by local old time loggers and their families. Bill Wuorinen, 80 year old retired logger in Naselle, said, “This book is great. I read every word and am very pleased with it.”
The book focuses on both photographs and stories of loggers, logging companies, and logging equipment. All are important because while photos give one image, the stories of those who lived behind the photographs are of equal value. The Center is also pleased to have been able to capture historic information from those who grew up in logging camps in the Toonerville Family Camp on upper Salmon Creek near Naselle, the Crown Family Camp at Duck Creek on the Elochoman River near Cathlamet, and the Saldern Logging Camp in Grays River at bottom of KM Hill.
Books are for sale at the Archives Center for $25 through December 15th. After that date, they will sell for $30. All of the authors including Bryan Penttila, Donna Gatens-Klint, Jim LeMonds and Karen Bertroch, will be at the Center on Saturday, November 12th from noon to 4 pm to sign books. The Center is located at 1056 State Route 4 in Naselle. Books can also be purchased on line at the Center’s web site at: www.appeloarchives.org. For more information, contact the Center at (360) 484-7103 or Karen Bertroch at (360) 749-4955. The Center regular hours are Tuesday through Friday from 10 to 4 and Saturdays from 10 to 2.
Being an American Essay Contest Deadline Approaches
Students Can Win Up to $1,000 in National Essay Competition Focused on the Constitution.
Arlington, VA: The deadline for high-school students and their teachers to submit essays for the Bill of Rights Institute’s national Being an American Essay Contest is fast approaching. The Contest asks students to explore the Founding principles outlined in the Constitution by answering the question: “How does the Constitution establish and maintain a culture of liberty?”
The Contest, which has quickly become the largest high-school essay competition of its kind, totaling over 80,000 submitted essays, is administered by the Bill of Rights Institute, a non-profit educational organization in the Washington, D.C. area devoted to educating young people about the Constitution and Founding principles.
“This contest is unique in that it gives students the opportunity to think about the important Founding principles communicated in our Constitution,” said Dr. Jason Ross, Bill of Rights Institute Vice President of Education Programs. “This contest is vital to helping students see the Founding principles as a meaningful part of the American experiment of self-government.”
The top three student winners from each of five geographical regions will be awarded cash prizes of $1,000 (First Place), $500 (Second Place), and $250 (Third Place). Teacher sponsors of each student winner will also receive a cash prize of $100.
Essays must be submitted online at www.BillofRightsInstitute.org/Contest by 11:59 P.M. PST on December 15, 2011. Supporting contest materials, including lesson plans meeting Common Core standards, are provided at no cost to teachers who want to incorporate the Essay Contest into their classroom.
The Essay Contest serves as a key part of the Bill of Rights Institute’s mission to educate young people about the words and ideas of America’s Founders, the liberties guaranteed in our Founding documents, and how our Founding principles continue to affect and shape a free society

American Band “Detour” Playing
The Americana band “Detour” will perform in concert at 8:00 on Saturday, November 12th, at the Skamokawa Grange. The four-piece consists of accordionist Toby Hanson, drummer Mike Friel, Steve Nebel on guitar, and band-leader Kristi Nebel on bass. All band members sing. Admission to the two-hour performance will be $10.00.
Kristi and Steve Nebel from Tacoma, WA, are no strangers to Skamokawa, having played three times in the past with “The Celluloid Cowboys” at the Wahkiakum County Fair. They’ve also performed concerts as a duo at Redmen Hall, The Inn at Lucky Mud, and the Pioneer Church in Cathlamet. KMUN Radio in Astoria has played a number of their songs from previous CDs. “Detour” is on tour to promote their recent recording project, which features a selection of early Western swing and country standards along with a few original tunes.
Says Kristi, “Steve asked me what I’d record as a solo project if I had my way. I think he was hoping I’d pick a dozen or so of his originals; but unbeknownst to him I had a long-held fantasy band in mind to play Western swing music, which has always felt uplifting to me and fits my personal musical style like a glove. The infectiously loping groove of it transports me to a happy place.”
The duo, who just recently returned from a successful folk music tour in England and Scotland, have had a parallel career playing for dancers in cocktail lounges. The upcoming concert will include some of Nebel’s songs about the fishing fleets of Alaska, where the Nebels traveled with their music for six years. Accordionist Toby Hanson is familiar to the Naselle community with his band “The Smiling Scandinavians,” regulars at the bi-annual Finnish-American Folk Festival. His expertise and love of polka music create welcomed contributions to the repertoire. To hear a sample of the band’s sound, visit www.sknebel.com/detour/index_files/Page267.html.
Opening for “Detour” on November 12 will be Sunrise Fletcher, longtime local favorite. Featured will be songs from his ninth CD “Unplugged,” including his own original songs.
Refreshments will be available. Tickets may be purchased at the door. For more information call 360-795-8770. The grange hall is located next to the Wahkiakum County Fairgrounds at 16 Fairgrounds Road, Skamokawa, WA. 98647.

New Mural in Naselle
The Appelo Archives Center in Naselle now has a new mural showing historic sites from Naselle through Grays River, Washington. Painted by well known local artist, Debbie Littlefield, the mural was installed by contractor, Scott Baker, in the downstairs entry room at the Center along a beam under the ceiling. In the 14 foot long mural, historic sites are illustrated painted from photographs in the Archives Center’s collection. A few of the historic sites painted include the Naselle grade school, the Altoona cannery, the Deep River log dump and Lutheran Church, and the Covered Bridge and Meserve Store in Grays River.
Even chickens, dairy cows and calves are included. Littlefield, popular artist at the Finnish American Folk Festival, developed the mural with images moving from west to east and showing primarily structures now gone. Open July 16th, Redmen Hall is featuring an exhibit of work by the Clatsop Weavers and Spinners Guild. They are a talented group of artists from Astoria and the Long Beach Peninsula who are returning to our Hall to show their new items.
The focus this year is an interesting one – using recycled materials in spinning and weaving – hence the title “Fiber Arts Go Green”. Together they are presenting and selling work done using recycled material and their regular hand spun and hand woven items.
They have shown their wonderful pieces here before so those who have seen them know how lucky Redmen Hall is to have them.
The exhibit opens on July 16th at 12 noon and there will be a reception with demonstrations by both the weavers and the spinners from 3p.m. to 5:30 p.m. that afternoon.
The exhibit will run until August 28th. Redmen Hall is located in Skamokawa, Washington on SR4 (Ocean Beach Highway) and our hours are noon to 4p.m., Thursday through Sunday. For more information you can call during business hours at (360) 795 3007.

Art Gallery at LCC featuring paintings of Leslie Peterson
Painter Leslie Peterson will exhibit her work June 27 through July 26 at the Art Gallery, Lower Columbia College.
The exhibit will open with a reception Monday, June 27, 4-6 p.m. The reception and exhibit are free and open to the public.
Peterson, a member of Gallery 114 in Portland, works mostly from photographs, using the photograph as inspiration for a distinct piece of art, rather than limiting herself to attempting to copy or emulate it.
She writes: “My technique is based on pared-down simplicity. The images are simply and boldly drawn. I paint thinly, and I try to keep the drawing visible if possible. I work directly on wood panel. The colors are rich and yet subtle, based on a limited palette, working off of the color of the surface I work on.
Peterson characterizes her style as based on the American Regionalism, American Realism, and Modernist movements, with their sense of timelessness, and a tradition of depicting the human condition and civic life. (Photo pictured here is “Big Red Sun”, art is in full color.)
More information about Leslie Peterson and her work is on her website, lesliepetersonpainting.com and her blog, lesliepeterson.blogspot.com
The Art Gallery, located in LCC’s Rose Center for the Arts, 15th & Washington Way in Longview, is open this summer on Mondays, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.; Tuesdays, 1-4 p.m.; and Wednesdays, 10 a.m.-6 p.m.
Weekend of Jazz, Art and Antiques planned in Downtown Centralia
The Centralia Downtown Association is sponsoring the First Annual Jazzartique Festival, to be held July 15–17, 2011. The event will feature three outdoor jazz stages, an indoor antique event, an art fair, and local food and spirits.
Grammy-nominated jazz vocalist Karrin Allyson kicks off the event with a performance at the Historic Fox Theatre in downtown Centralia on Friday evening (July 15) at 8pm). Tickets are available at local businesses and online at www.brownpapertickets.com/event/179725.
Both up and coming and established jazz musicians will perform Saturday and Sunday at three stages located throughout the downtown corridor. Individual shops and businesses will be dialed into jazz and several will host musicians in and around their shops. You can even bowl and skate to smooth and swinging jazz tunes!
An outdoor art fair will feature the work of local and regional artists. Kids of all ages will have a chance to express their creativity at a hands-on art fair and a collaborative art installation. Local artists’ work will also be displayed in gallery spaces and storefronts throughout downtown.
The third component of the event is the indoor antique show. Downtown Centralia, long established as a major hub for antiques, shines again as our 300-plus local vendors are joined by visiting antique dealers for your shopping enjoyment.
