ARTrails Fall Studio Tours

September 1, 2011 by Valley Bugler · Leave a Comment

ARTrails of Southwest Washington is pleased to announce its 2011 Fall Studio Tour and Gala Reception schedule.
On the 3rd and 4th weekends in September (September 17-18 and 24-25, 10 am-5 pm), more than 60 artists will open their studios to the public.
Driving through the region’s historic communities and meandering back roads on the way to watch artists work and enjoy their creations is a delightful way to enjoy a fall weekend. Gather a carload of friends, share the gas, discover Washington and find your favorite pieces of art. FREE.
Tour kicks off with a GALA OPENING RECEPTION on Friday, September 16 (4-8 pm), at the Exhibition Gallery in downtown Centralia’s historic train depot (210 Railway Avenue, Centralia WA).
Artwork includes Paintings, Sculpture, Glass Art, Jewelry, Pottery, Mixed Media, Fiber Art, Carved Wood, Basketry, Photographic Art, Collage, and much more. This event is also free to attend.
Plan to spend a day, a weekend, or maybe two meeting artists and seeing where and how they work. During this self-directed tour, which will take you throughout Lewis County, you can observe a variety of work in all stages of development — painting, printmaking, fiber arts, ceramics, glass blowing, jewelry, and much more.
ARTrails provides a rare opportunity for the public to meet artists in their studio/workplace and to observe techniques of work in progress. In addition, ARTrails seeks opportunities to promote the arts and the work of member artists through exhibits, workshops, and educational programs in coordination with area businesses, schools, and organizations.
Through all of these efforts, ARTrails promotes recognition that the arts are a significant component of Southwest Washington life and that many fine, dedicated artists live and work in the area. ARTrails is intended to aid and support artists while providing an inspiring and enjoyable educational experience for the interested public.

Wahkiakum County Fair

August 1, 2011 by Valley Bugler · Leave a Comment

WAHKIAKUM COUNTY (wuh-Ki-uh-kuhm), the 3rd smallest county in Washington, was created by the territorial legislature in 1854.
The name comes from a Kathlamet Indian village located on the north bank of the Columbia River near the present town of Cathlamet. Chief Wakaiyakam, whose name the village took, is buried in Pioneer Cemetery in Cathlamet. Wahkiakum means “tall timber” in Chinook.
This fantastic area offers its annual County Fair from August 18th-20th this year, in conjunction with the Farmers Market, Farm Animal and Agricultural Exhibits, 4H & FFA Carnival Rides and Games.
Of course, all of the gut busting Fair Food will be present, as well as the music and entertainment set for the stage.
Enjoy the locally grown produce at the Farmer’s Market Wahkiakum County Fairgrounds in Skamokawa WA. For questions, call (360)795-3480.
In conjunction with the fair, the close-by city of Long Beach is hosting the Washington State International Kite Festival during the week of the 15th – 21st, so grab your fliers and stunt kites or plan on buying some new ones when you hit the beach.
Both events offer oodles of family friendly events and activities, as well as free entertainment and play.
For Kite Festival questions, please be sure and call (800)451-2542.

Benefit concert brings nationally reknown musicians to local area

August 1, 2011 by Valley Bugler · 1 Comment

Benefit Concert and Auction for Disabled American Veterans sports famous headliners and a wide variety of quality music on August 20th at the Riverdale Raceway off Spirit Lake Hwy in Toutle, WA.
HEADLINER: The Stephen Cochran Project from Nashville (everyone should see his story on Facebook, as it is quite fascinating.)
Kenny Lee and the Sundowners
The Bo Russell Band
The Robin Gibson Band
Meaghan Johnston (Local Toutle High School graduate)
and more!
The goal of the benefit is to raise monies to purchase 2 ¾ Ton vans, one covered trailer, and enough money for fuel  to cover our homeless veteran’s projects, insurance bonds, etc. Support will be raised through the ticket sales and great auction (tax deductible receipts available) items such as antiques, flower baskets, crafts and a trip to Puerta Vallarta.
THE CONCERT
Musical talent from Portland, Vancouver, and Olympia, as well as local will be hitting the stage from 2pm – as late as midnight if need be. Genres include country, blues and rock, with a smattering of comedians, coordinated with a professional emcee announcer. Also at the Concert / Auction will be vendor booths offering various food, beer, hard liquor and crafts.
Festival seating (chairs and blankets) in front of the stage and around the grounds will offer up a relaxed atmosphere with which to enjoy the concert. There will be a reserved area up front for wheelchair veterans.
Parking:  there will be a large area for passenger vehicle parking, and a separate area for motor homes and campers, no ‘hookups’ available. 2 small hotels just down the hill.
Security:  Will be present.
Bonus:  Prior to performing, the owner will open the motocross and/or drag tracks for their typical practice use (just sign the waiver please), performers free of charge. Also, the property borders the Toutle River, which has a reputation for good fishing and gold panning (or, if nothing else, a cool dip on a hot summer day).
Tickets are $25.00 per person, $20.00 for disabled vets, 14 and under free.
The track is located approx 12 miles from I-5 east on Spirit Lake Highway.  Another 30+ miles and you’re at Johnston Ridge, the top of Mt. St. Helens.

Artist of the Month: Mona Nolden

July 1, 2011 by admin · Leave a Comment

New Artist of the Month in the “For the Love of Art” group is Mona Nolden. She has been working in the stained glass medium for fifteen years. Her love of glass is the basis of all her art. A mentor who had great faith in her abilities as an artist asked her to teach. She has been doing so for twelve years. Teaching has become a driving force in her pursuit of art as her students challenge her to learn more. She enjoys working with organic materials, fossils, rocks, shells, found items, and has a great love of all things from the ocean. She also has done wall art with copper, fused glass, and mixed media. For her Stained glass is an endless rainbow of possibilities. She does repairs and custom work of all kinds. All artwork is original in design and used only once in all custom work. She has a very supportive husband who is also an artist and has seen her through many an artistic crisis. She also has two wonderful sons who may not always understand her art but are proud of her none the less. FOR THE LOVE OF ART meets every 4th Thursday of the month at 5:30 – 7pm at SPLITS conference room, Longview WA. For more information visit our website www.ftloa.org
