Adorable Adopt-ee for December – ‘Rabbit’
December 1, 2011 by Valley Bugler · Leave a Comment

Rabbit will win your heart the moment you pick him up. He’s a ‘quick kisser’, and loves to cuddle. He’s happiest snuggled in your arms, and when you put him down, he looks at you with those big brown eyes as if to say ‘what? what did I do?’
His tail is always wagging; it was impossible to capture a photo of him with that constantly-moving tail. Such a happy dog. Rabbit is just a darling little boy, looking for a lap. And a nap:) Rescue pets make The Best Companions.

Paradise Dog Ranch lives up to its name

By Sandy Allen, Valley Bugler
If one were able to ask all of Brian O’neill’s clients if they love Brian and love spending time at the Paradise Dog Ranch, there would sure to be resounding barking & tail wagging answer “Yes”!
Paradise Dog Ranch is a free range, cage free, dog boarding and daycare facility located in Kalama, WA, just 10 minutes off I-5.
Paradise Dog Ranch was established in 2003 and is owned and operated by Brian O’Neill.
O’Neill has 14yrs of experience working with dogs and has one employee at this time.
O’Neill says that the lucky dogs that come to his ranch have “supervised playtime all day long on 5 fenced acres of forested fun”.
All dogs play together as a pack and he only allows socialized, friendly, non-aggressive dogs.
At night time, all dogs bed down indoors as a pack on fluffy dog beds, as opposed to kennels.
Heated in the Winter and air conditioned in the Summer, Paradise Dog Ranch is truly a dog’s paradise!
O’Neill also offers a Dog Daycare Shuttle service.
For just $20 he will come to your home between 8-10am, pick up your Dog in his shuttle van and they will go play for 6 hours.
He will then return your happy pet back to your home between 4-6pm.
If you are interested in sending your Dog out to play just once a week, please give him a call and he will try to accommodate most any schedule.
Your four footed family member is sure to return home dog tired and ready for bed after a wonderful romping day with the pack at Paradise Dog Ranch! O’Neill says “Let your Dog run with the pack!”
Your Dog will surely have a tail wagging experience and love each and every day that it spends with Brian O’Neill at Paradise Dog Ranch.

Adorable Adopt-ee for November

Copper is just one of a a litter of gorgeous, playful kittens, about 3 months old: Jasper (a buff tabby), Copper (an orange boy), Garnet (black) and Nickle (soft blue gray). They’ve all been spayed and neutered and are ready for their new homes. They are currently in foster care, but make regular appearances at the Longview Petco store on Saturdays. They would all love a home for the holidays, somewhere warm and safe, where they could cozy up on a soft bed, or better yet, fall asleep in your arms. Rescue pets make The Best Companions.

Readers chime in with their stories
November 1, 2011 by Valley Bugler · Leave a Comment

Your loyal Publisher had been trying to fill this empty space, and decided to ask a question on FaceBook: “I need a super sweet OR super funny animal story”, and readers responded!
It’s a Kitten. Really.
By Ronda Butterfield
I could write about the time when I was a little girl, and this momma kitty had kittens in our attic and one of them slipped between the walls and so we heard meowing from inside our wall.
My dad had to knock a hole in the wall to rescue the kitten, when he began to reach his hand in he pulled it out really quick.
I asked him what was wrong, and he said, “What if it’s a rat??”
I said, “Dad, rats don’t meow.”
LOL. He finally reached in and pulled out the skinny little kitten. He was my hero.
Boy Hamsters
By Dena Enyeart
So we bought 2 hamsters.
The pet store gal pulled them out and put one in a box for each girl.
I jokingly said they are both boys right?
She told me: “Of course they are both from the cage marked male hamsters”.
Silly me!
A few weeks later my daughter starts screaming as ‘Barry’ the hamster had weird things hooked to it.
So ‘Barry’ became ‘Pumpkin’, mother of 10.

Breed Profile: what is a LÖWCHEN?
October 1, 2011 by Laura Maria · Leave a Comment
The Löwchen is a companion dog bred for centuries for the sole purpose of giving love and hoping to get love in return. If he saw a squirrel he might run after it but wouldn’t know what to do if he caught it! If he confronted a burglar, he’d bark and then, with a Löwchen grin, lick his hand and lend assistance.
The Löwchen is convinced that life is a bowl of liver treats. Perhaps this happy attitude comes from being allowed for hundreds of years to sleep on the beds of princesses as a combination hot water bottle and flea catcher. But don’t be mistaken, this dog may look like a fluff but he is fearless, a true little lion!
He will stand up to a German Shepherd and bark down a Great Dane. He is smart, trainable, resourceful and very adaptable. He will gladly sleep in a crate but he would prefer to sleep on your bed. He rarely meets a stranger, loves children, other animals, long walks, cuddle time, toys and car rides. He is alert to suspicious noise and should be trained as a puppy not to bark excessively.
He loves exercise wherever he finds it, in a big backyard or on regular walks and trips to the park. He loves obedience and excels in agility. He loves a challenge to his intelligence as well as his stamina.
His joy in life shows in the sparkle in his eye, the bounce in his gait and the wave of a gaily-carried tail. He is non-shedding, hypoallergenic, relatively free from genetic disease and should lead a long, active, loving life well into his golden years. His coat is generally easy to care for. He loves to be brushed and pampered several times a week and groomed every two months by a professional groomer.
If he is a show dog, he must be shown in the Lion Trim. Otherwise he looks adorable in a simple puppy trim. Because of the distinctive Lion Trim, we are able to trace his existence back to the 1400s through works of art. However, there are several theories regarding his early history. One thing we do know for sure, since the Löwchen was the dog of royalty; the breed was almost destroyed in every major European conflict.
How lucky we are that a few dedicated breeders over the years considered it a labor of love to save this wonderful breed from extinction!

Dogapaloooooza! Sept. 18th, 2011
September 1, 2011 by Valley Bugler · Leave a Comment

The 4th annual Dogapalooza will be Saturday, September 17th and Sunday, September 18th at the Cowlitz County Fairgrounds (1900 7th Ave.) in Longview, WA. Dogapalooza is a benefit for the Humane Society of Cowlitz County with free admission.
Dogapalooza is expanding to a two-day event. There’s too much fun to fit into one day! Dogapalooza 2011 will be the biggest dog party you’ve ever seen. In 2007 the 1st annual Wiener Dog races were held at the Cowlitz County Fair. It was such a HUGE success that in 2008 it expanded to the 1st Annual Dogapalooza at the Fair. That turned out to be too big for the Fair, and so beginning in 2009 Dogapalooza became its own free-standing event.
This year Dogapalooza will feature a two-day sanctioned flyball tournament with 30 teams from all around the Northwest including British Columbia. Last year Dogapalooza had demos of flyball—please check out any flyball videos on the internet to see how much fun it is. This year the flyball people are coming back and bringing all of their friends.
Dogapalooza will also showcase a herding dog clinic for beginning, intermediate, and advanced herding dogs put on by Brian Abingdon, a nationally recognized expert in herding dogs. Last year Dogapalooza had demos of herding dogs, and the opportunity for any dog to try herding. This year your dog can still give it a try, but Brian’s bringing sheep, goats, and ducks so that you can see top-notch herding dogs in action.
New this year will be lure coursing. Watch dogs blaze around a course trying to catch a simple plastic bag. It’s the thrill of the chase! Try it with your own dog. The lure machine can run at different speeds to fit whatever kind of dog you have.
Attendance is free. Parking is free. There’s a $5 fee to enter either the Wiener Dog Races or the Costume Contest. Any donations to the Humane Society of Cowlitz County are encouraged and more than welcome. It’s a great cause! Please come and support it, and have a great time along the way.
The actual schedule of events is still being finalized, and so stay tuned to www.thedogzone.net or call 360-425-7297.
Vendor booths are still available. A 10’ x 10’ space for the two days costs $75.
Here’s some of the other activities at Dogapalooza:
AKC Fun Match: See an actual dog show in a casual atmosphere
Rally/Obedience Event: It’s called a “Show & Go” for practicing competitive obedience
Misty the soccer goalie: Kids try to score a goal by kicking the ball past Misty
Silly Dog Contests: (like longest tail, shortest ears, grayest muzzle, best kisser)
Peanut Butter Eating Contest: Which dog can empty the container the fastest?
Police Dog demo: See the amazing skills they use to protect us.
Ball Fiend: Laugh at a group of dogs chasing a group of balls.
Musical Chairs: When the music stops, the last dog to sit is eliminated.
Costume Contest: How cute & clever can you be? You can be in costume too.
Low Rider Races (bulldogs & bassets): Who’s the fastest low rider?
Tiny Titans Races: Who’s the champion of the under 20# weight class?
Wiener Dog Races: It’s crazy! It’s chaotic! It’s a barrel of laughs!

Adorable Adopt-ee for September

Need a lap-warmer and furry companion?
“Cessa” is your girl!

Cessa’s life was just about perfect. Until the baby arrived. Cessa wasn’t sure about this tiny creature that made funny noises and took up so much of the time that used to be spent on Cessa. What happened to her quiet environment? Cessa missed all the attention that she received before the baby arrived. And she wasn’t very patient with this two-legged creature that demanded so much attention.
Tearfully, Cessa’s guardian relinquished her to our rescue. She realized it was the best thing for Cessa, to be rehomed where there were not small children to stress her out. Cessa is a gentle little dog who could spend all day sitting on your lap.
Cessa is about 4 years old, is spayed and current on her vaccinations.
