Federal Emergency Management (FEMA) Recommendations

September 1, 2010 by Valley Bugler · Leave a Comment

September is National Emergency Preparedness Month.

When you consider what supplies you would need for three days after a natural disaster, first consider what emergencies are most likely to occur in your area. Prepare accordingly.

A “supply kit” sounds like something you could carry, but it isn’t. When you consider a three-day supply of water and food per person (and pet), plus clothes, shoes, a sleeping bag or blanket for each one, plastic sheeting and duct tape, it’s hardly moveable. You need space and a convenient location.

Several countries and six U.S. States work toward zero traffic deaths

September 1, 2010 by Valley Bugler · Leave a Comment

In 2009, there were 1.6 traffic fatalities in the United States per 100 million miles traveled. It was the lowest number since 1950, but traffic and safety officials say we can do much better. Some are pushing for a goal of zero traffic fatalities.

While the goal is probably not achievable, a new coalition of safety advocates, transportation officials and police is urging Congress to set a national goal of reducing annual traffic deaths by half over the next 20 years.

COAL MINE LEASED

Coal Mine Leased (September 1, 1910)
Max Miller, resident engineer of the Northern Pacific for this division, and associates have taken a long lease on the Huntington coal mine a short distance south of this city, and expect to begin delivering black diamonds to our citizens within a few days. A bunker will be built and a washer installed at once, and hereafter when you get a load of this product it will be clean coal instead of containing a large amount of clay and other foreign substances. For making steam and many other purposes the product of this mine is most excellent, and when the new machinery is installed and the tunnel extended a hundred or two feet, as it will be at once, it is certain that most excellent coal for all purposes will be obtained. The owners of the property have not had the means to do so, or else the mine would have been much better developed than it is now, for the quality of the coal increases as the earth is penetrated deeper. We wish Mr. Miller and his associates the best of success, and believe they will achieve it.

Autumn Begins September 22, 2010

September 1, 2010 by Valley Bugler · Leave a Comment

The first day of autumn is September 22

Autumn is an invisible bridge that spans leaving the delights of summer and slowly reaches into the world of winter.

It is the time when most of the crops are harvested and the days get shorter and cooler especially in the northern latitudes. September is the month of the Harvest Moon, a full moon that allows farmers to work later and have more time to bring in their crops. Gardens are ripped up, but rows of turnips, potatoes and onions are planted.

Food makers crank up flavor intensity, claim umani is the fifth basic taste

September 1, 2010 by Valley Bugler · Leave a Comment

As Americans’ food and snack preferences change, food producers are satisfying their tastes for hotter, mintier and more exotic flavors.

One example: Frito-Lay’s Doritos are labeled First-, Second- and Third-Degree Burn. They are made with jalapeno, buffalo and habanero flavors respectively, which have been tweaked from Asian and Mexican flavorings.
