Meet ‘Chaquita’ mama!
When employees arrived at work recently at a local big box store, they found a banana box, duct taped shut, with several holes poked in the sides. As they neared the box, they heard frantic meowing. This could not be good. When they opened the box, they were not prepared for the pitiful sight that greeted them. A skin-and-bones momma cat and 4 tiny sickly kittens, huddled around her for warmth. What kind of human being does this to helpless animals? It was obvious that momma cat had done her very best to care for the babies, and the lack of food and water had taken it’s toll on her body. You could count every bone.
Our rescue was called, and we immediately rushed them to a local Vet clinic, where they were given subcutaneous fluids to rehydrate them. They had Upper Respiratory Infections, and were given antibiotics. Two of the little kittens were so weak they couldn’t even hold up their heads. An emergency call went out for a foster home. We were blessed by the response, and placed the little family with a registered nurse, who hand-fed the little ones every 2 hours, and made sure they had their antibiotics on time. How lucky we were to find this woman.
Now the little family is healthy, the kittens are playful and energetic. Momma cat Chaquita now has beautiful long silky hair. She’s still a bit on the thin side, but with continued good nutrition, she will be soon be ready to appear of Cat Fancy magazine; she’s a beauty! And she has a sweet disposition. There is one female kitten still available – Chunk – who has a unique smoke-color coat. If you’d like to adopt both momma Chaquita and her darling kitten, come by Petco and meet them.

‘Shasta’ needs a home
By Georgia Butterfield
Shasta is looking for a family that loves to hike and camp and explore the beautiful Pacific northwest. He’s a young boy, under 2 years of age with lots of energy to burn.
Shasta’s an athletic dog, and would be the perfect jogging partner. He’s eager to please and knows basic obedience (sit, down, shake). He would be a perfect candidate for advanced obedience training like Canine Good Citizen or Rally.
Shasta is neutered and current on his vaccinations. He’s ready to hit the trails this weekend…..what are you waiting for:)

Beautiful Anya – looking at her, you do not realize what her circumstances were in her ‘prior life’ and how far she’s come. If you look at her closely, however, you will see the sadness in her eyes. We received a call from a homeowner; he had a stray cat in his back yard that ‘kept having litters of kittens.’
He was tired of having to ‘dispose’ of the kittens! We immediately set out to bring this poor momma cat (whose babies kept ‘disappearing’) into the safety of our rescue. She had become very unsocial toward the homeowner; and who could blame her?
We coaxed Anya into a carrier, took her to warmth and safety of a foster home, where she has now been spayed and brought current on her vaccinations. She’s still very skittish and has a difficult time trusting humans. Anya will approach you when you’re sitting near her, but if you reach for her, she skiddadles away.
She has come a long way, however, she still has a long way to go. Anya needs a patient owner, one that can invest the time necessary to demonstrate to this gentle girl that she can trust again. Might that be you?
Valley Bugler readers have provided forever homes for many of our animals – thank you!!

A little fluff ball who follows you around like a puppy dog, Leo is just the perfect family addition. Leo gets along well with other cats, ignores dogs (as long as they don’t’ chase him) and loves children.
He has long silky gray & white hair and the fluffiest tail. Handsome boy, isn’t he? He’s been neutered, is current on his vaccinations, has his favorite toys packed, and is just waiting for the call – that you have a place in your home and in your heart for him. Would you like to take Leo home today?

‘Smokey’ is putting on his brave face, although he’s very sad. His guardian has enlisted in the military, and Smokey was left behind, to be re-homed.
He doesn’t understand why he is in foster care, and sits most of the day, on the back of the sofa looking out the window, watching for his guardian to return. This is a very loving cat, and needs a family to love him back. He’s rather shy when you first meet him, but warms up when he understands you love him. Wouldn’t this sweet boy be a good fit for your family? If interested in cats, dogs, or other pets available for adoption, please contact:

Navaho
November 1, 2010 by Georgia Butterfield · Leave a Comment
This story begins as a sad one, however, it has a happy ending.
Navaho, a handsome brown tabby, was minding his own business, when he was grabbed by a neighborhood 12 year old kid and tortured. He held the kitty underwater in the family pool, in an attempt to kill it. When the cat fought back, the juvenile then took the cat, swung it around several times by its tail, and flung it over the fence into the alley, like a piece of garbage. All this was witnessed by a neighbor, who immediately called the Cowlitz Countyl Humane Society. The tortured animal managed to drag itself to the porch of the caller, and collapsed. The kitty was immediately taken to a local Vet office, where he refused to give up. I guess Navaho felt he had a few more lives left in him:~) With the TLC provided by the Veterinarian staff, and Navaho’s spirit, he has now recovered, is living in loving foster care and is available for adoption. In spite of his cruel treatment, Navaho remains a trusting, loving kitty. He would make a wonderful addition to any household.

‘Sully’

Sully is a great family dog. He is active and just loves kids. His current family loves him, but just don’t have enough time for him. He needs someone to run/jog with or throw that ball for him after school. Sully would be a great hiking partner and would even carry his own pack on the journey. Hiking the Cascades, or running on the beach at Cannon is always better when shared with a canine friend.
