From the Editor’s Desk – September 2010
September 1, 2010 by Michelle Myre
It just doesn’t seem right that the schools are starting up again. Especially not with the “un-summer” that we experienced this year! You all know what I am talking about, because I’ve heard you say it!
To look on the bright side, at least we were able to experience days on end of beautiful sunny weather (after 2pm) and the gardens finally started producing, although later than normal.
Check out our How does your Garden Grow? winners, featured on page 14-15. Each one said that this year was drastically different and threw many curveballs in the realm of gardening – but they have all seen harvests and anticipate the late fall harvests that are just around the corner.
My mouth is watering just thinking about it. All those fresh late-summer/early fall beans, big fat tomatoes, cabbage and zucchini are delectable treats, not to mention the apples that are started to plump on some of our new trees!!
We finally found a new house to which move our family of 5 – a great big farmhouse with 2.5 acres and a creek. About fifteen fruit trees, three raised garden beds and seven blueberry bushes are just waiting for our house sale to close. We are blessed, and I am excited to get moved in!
Not that I am grateful for my beautiful, small 900’ foot, two bedroom one bath house that has held my dear family for the past four years! But let’s just say that it’s time, shall we? ☺
This September issue is a bit of a shocker to those who have procrastinated believing that this year is slipping away. Yes, it’s now September. Only a few short months away from Thanksgiving and Christmas!! And, trust me, the department stores know it. Their advertising is already getting keyed up. I don’t like to run Christmas ads until we’re onto the November. I mean, you have to give people a chance to adjust to the fact that they just left summer behind, right?
Speaking of summer, you can still live it up around these parts, as we are reknown for having “Indian Summers” – which last well into late September. Let’s hope and pray that this year is a “typical” year for us! Sunshine through September, please Lord.
Detailed in this issue are a wide variety of activities and adventures on which you can take your entire family. For the arts minded, check out the opposite page for events and activities going on around Cowlitz County; Columbia Theatre is announcing their single ticket sales for a bang-up season; the Gem and Mineral show is detailed on page 6; and the Harvest Classic is coming up fast, found on page 11. There is so much more, including an attractive “Girls Night Out” event I’m thinking about hitting with some girlfriends. Ad shown on page 3.
As you can tell, my life is in a transition, with moving and whatnot – so we are looking for another sales rep to help handle my load. If you know of an experienced sales representative who is looking for a great job, please have them contact me. ☺
Until next month, please remember to shop as locally as possible. Avoid the “big box” stores if you can, and make new friends with local business owners in town.
Need some suggestions? Just scan the advertisers in the Valley Bugler each month. I can tell you from personal experience that all of these clients are fantastic to deal with, and their businesses are well worth the visit!
Sincerely,
Michelle Myre
