From the Editor’s Desk – August 2010

August 1, 2010 by Michelle Myre

Okay, I have to admit that I have stayed away from the Twilight series as long as I could. Add yet another one to the long list of those who were sucked into its intriguing storyline and lovable characters. (Pun fully intended ☺

An avid reader, I usually can not find time to read in the summer months, what with so many fun things going on. Somehow I managed, and I think it was because the clock was striking an ungodly hour while I was on the couch reading!

With three small children, the idea of reading a novel by the pool becomes just that, an idea. I’m sure that there will be a season in life where novels will seem a boring pasttime, but I’m not at that season right now!

Whether you have children, grandchildren or are a stellar auntie or uncle, there are many things to do around these parts that should keep you hoppin’ during the sunlight hours, and even into the dusk.

For those who enjoy bicycling, there is a neat First Annual Grand Prix Criterium coming to the Longview Civic Circle on Saturday, August 14th. You can read all about it on page 4.

If you haven’t ever seen a Crit, you should definitely hightail it to the round-about and watch the excitement. I remember being in Sun Valley as a young teenager, where we happened upon a longer course Crit, and it was absolutely incredible to watch all these bicyclists come zooming around the corner all together.

There are tons of races throughout the day, so stop on by and get your first taste of a Grand Prix Crit on the 15th.

Speaking of my younger years, my husband delights those around us as he regales everyone with stories about my “Garlic Love”.

Yes, the love before him.

He claims that when he was first dating me our senior year in college at Western Washington University, he could “literally smell me before he saw me”.

Now, I don’t know how true that is, but I did eat a lot of garlic….

Which is why the Garlic Festival, held on August 27 – 29 this year, is such a treasure to attend. It’s at the Southwest Washington Fairgrounds in Chehalis, and offers anything and everything garlic, as well as Wine Tasting.

Garlic vendors of every sort are there, as well as herbal suppliers and local handicrafters. It’s really a ball of fun, even if you don’t like garlic! Honest!

And those of us that do? Well, it’s heaven on earth. Simply put.

Before I sign off, wiping the drool off my cheek because I was thinking about pickled garlic, I’d like to offer some hope to those of us who are concerned about the economy.

I speak with hundreds of business owners throughout each month, and the overall consensus from at least 90%, is that “things are looking up!”

So with that positive information in mind, please enjoy this issue of your GOOD news newspaper!
