From the Editor’s Desk – March 2010

March 1, 2010 by Michelle Myre

This is one of my favorite issues to put together, with both the Senior focus and especially the Green Guide. Sustainability and local economy are near and dear to my heart, and something I happen to be passionate about. (As if you didn’t know!) ☺

It is a strange February we had this year, with daffodils and other early bloomers poking up as early as the second week. We’re not used to that sight until March, and it has some folks worried that the flower growing season is going to be out of whack.

Well, it might. But you know what? Life goes on.

The flowers will grow, grass will get longer and beg to be mowed, and parents will sigh with relief as the sunshine allows “outside to play” to become a more prominent statement in the household!

Going outside this spring into our beautiful “green” Northwest, spurred the idea of doing our Green Guide. Full of great information on new technology and sustainability ideas, our guide this year can be found on pages 10-15.

It sure is exciting to hear about all that businesses are doing to “go green”, and what you can do in your own household to help save money and resources at the same time.

I like to do simple things such as using a vinegar based cleanser with lemongrass or tea tree oil. Why pay mega bucks for something that costs me well under a dollar a bottle to make? And it smells a heck of a lot better. The lemongrass and tea tree oils are both natural germicides, so you don’t have to deal with the NASTY triclosan stuff or other abrasive chemicals that should be banned from public use anyhow. There is a recipe on page 13 for you.

Next month I will give you some of those recipes and uses for around your own home, and I guarantee you that it will save you MONEY!

Some folks don’t participate in the “green revolution” because they claim that it’s “too expensive” or “not worth it”. I suppose that I beg to differ – and loudly.

Natural based cleansers and organically grown foods, or locally grown Farmers Markets produce can be less expensive than commercial brands that use petroleum products or other abrasive chemicals.

I think that we are moving into an era where views such as mine are now becoming more commonplace, and I think that is fantastic.

This month’s focus not only incorporates our Green Guide, it also celebrates our Seniors in life. Those who are around us and in our lives that make it so very valuable and dear. Pages 7-9 encompass our Senior Guide that has everything to do with Seniors ages 55+

In closing, I wish you a very GREEN St. Patrick’s Day, and may the road rise to meet you, and may the wind be always at your back.
