“THE ART OF INTERIOR DESIGN”

March 1, 2010 by Shirley Bailey

Why is it important to use a professional designer? It means only this: Resources, knowledge, experience. A go-between for service people (also professionals in their own field). This business is truly a complicated art field…we are all artisans in our own areas.

When you call our business and ask for the name of one of our sub-contractors you are asking us to give you a service that we cannot give. If we give you the name of one of our subs you are bypassing the designer’s care and expertise and we cannot guarantee any work that was given to a workman without a “Work Order”.

A “Work Order” from a professional designer will prevent any error on the part of the workman. These people do the work as directed by a Design Professional, usually never seeing the home. There are any number of reasons for this step. Fabric Content, if you are providing the fabric for instance, design repeats, yardage, appropriate pattern and color for the home. All areas of expertise that should be addressed before any work is given to a worker.

Paint colors can be chosen from paint chips in a paint store, but these have absolutely no relation to how the colors will look in someone’s home. The designer needs to take a walk through the home, scan the way the light enters, the direction the home is placed on the lot. The type of landscaping. These all enter into the choice of colors for the walls of a home. The number of stories built into the home. The life style of the people that live there. The overall style of the construction and the structure of the house. Many materials are usually involved and a color scheme is usually established by a builder, or in many cases the builder’s wife…and these colors must be taken into consideration in order for the home to have a proper color and light flow from room to room in the home.

There are many questions to be answered by your professional interior designer. Many dollars will be saved by having a plan early in the game, in the case of a new home or a remodel. The overall scale of the furnishings of any home are crucial in the finishing: wood colors, paint colors, fabrics, blinds for light and privacy control, draperies which bring softness and style into many a contemporary house that has an over-abundance of large windows as well as huge ceiling heights, which must be taken into consideration when accessorizing a home.
