Picking the Perfect Pet

It would be difficult to go to a pet shop and not want to take each pet home…they’re all so cute!

Prowling through on-line sites can definitely help sort through the information on each type of animal, but it also can be overwhelming and confusing.

Some pets are perfect for busy families; some would just never work. So, it’s important to first evaluate what type of home you have to offer.

Young families tend to be busy and would do very well with a pet that could adapt to the commotion. Small, frail, or timid animals may be too much of a challenge to care for properly. But, a happy, energetic dog or cat may be just the thing.

There are also several other choices that can work beautifully in this type of family.

Small animals, including rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, and gerbils are perfect for young children. They are easy to care for and do well if you are away overnight. The daily care of these animals is easily done by the children, and weekly cleaning can be a project for the weekend. Once young children are taught the proper way to care for and handle their new pet, a parent can let the new pet bond with their children.

A fish aquarium is also a perfect fit. Children in the 4th and 5th grades can start to learn basic chemistry skills when “cycling” a new aquarium. Care for an aquarium can be as simple as five to ten minutes once a week for small partial water changes, and then daily for feeding and observation.

Reptiles are a popular choice for families with young boys. They are very interesting and easy to care for. Setting up the habitat can be expensive, but their daily care is minimal. Reptiles are cold-blooded, so they must be provided with extra lighting and heat.

Some families enjoy having birds as pets, and it can be a fun experience. Birds usually live longer than small animals, and can be nippy if left alone for too much of the time. A pet bird who bonds with it’s owner is a true treasure- always happy to see you and able to express it in a million different ways. People who have allergies or are unable to live with a little dust and birdseed on the floor, should really think this over first.

Many people believe that adding a new pet to the family means adopting only a new dog or cat. They really miss out on the rewarding experience of other types of pets. Each type of pet has great benefits, great challenges, and tons of love to share. Picking the right type will only help each person be able to care for and love their new pet with joy.
