“It’s the very best job in the world…and, I’ve got it!!”
October 1, 2008 by Dr. Anik St-Martin
A lot of people complain about their jobs, but I’ve got the best job in the world. Sometimes, I can’t believe it. No, I’m not a professional athlete or a movie star. I do something that, in my view, is even more fun. I am going to tell you what I do, but first, let me explain the photo in this letter. Let’s start with me, the mom and chiropractor in the picture.
Thirteen years ago, something happened that changed my life forever, and in turn, changed many other lives, too.
I suffered with low back pain from the time I was 13 years old. It was I was studying as a pre-med student, that the pain began severely affecting my quality of life. It became so intense that I could no longer handle sitting in class, I began standing through 26 hours of classes per week. After considering surgery, which, some suggested, a friend of mine convinced me to give a chiropractor a try. The chiropractor did an exam, took some x-rays, and then “adjusted” my spine. The adjustment didn’t hurt, it actually felt good. Within two weeks, my low back pain was gone, my seasonal allergies were much better, and I had tons more energy. It worked so well, and improved my life so much, that I changed my major and went to chiropractic school myself.
Marco, the boy being adjusted in the picture is my youngest son. He is three years old and possibly the happiest child I’ve ever met. When Marco was born, he immediately had difficulty regulating his body temperature. The pediatrician kept checking on him, telling us that he would have to remain in the hospital for up to two weeks if his temperature didn’t start regulating itself immediately. His first chiropractic adjustment was on the day he was born. Within an hour, his body temperature was normal, and we went home the next day. A few weeks later, Marco was experiencing labored breathing; his pediatrician told us that he had RSV, a condition for which children are usually hospitalized. Marco was adjusted, and a few days later, he had amazingly completely recovered.
The philosophy behind chiropractic is that body has a built in ability to heal itself. The catch is that it can only heal itself as long as the nervous system has no interference.
There are three types of stresses which can cause interference. The first is physical stress, such as the child birth, falls, heavy book bags, etc… The second type of stress that can lead to interference is chemical stress, such as poor food choices, environmental pollutants and in many cases, medications. The third type of stress is emotional stress, which as we all know, even children can experience.
When a child’s nervous system has any interference as a result of any of the above mentioned stresses, then their body’s ability to heal itself, is decreased and the child will immediately or eventually experience symptoms and illnesses.
Such symptoms may include Colic, difficulties breastfeeding, ear infections, asthma, allergies, attention deficit disorders, bed wetting, motor development problems and many more.
Chiropractors help remove nervous system interference, allowing for children to functions as close to 100% as possible. When children function well, they DO NOT have symptoms and can lead a happier, healthier life.
A common approach to childhood ailments is that of pharmaceutical drugs. In some cases, these are necessary and life saving but much too often, these drugs prolong illnesses and never get to the root cause of the problem. For example, many children with asthma, chronic ear infections, allergies, etc… take medications on a daily or weekly basis and are forced to continue doing so because, without these medications, their symptoms persist. Unfortunately, these pharmaceutical products often simply mask the problem and never get rid of the true cause of it. One also hates to consider the potentially harmful side effects that come with these drugs.
