“My most embarrassing first day of school happened in my 3rd year, in a small Montana town where generations went to the same 3-room school house.

It was a beautiful fall day and I was not only very shy, but also the largest kid in class – okay in the first seven grades… On the 1st recess of the 1st day of school a couple of friends and I ran out to the playground (after one of the teachers checked for rattlesnakes) and went straight to the teeter-totter.

Because I was so “husky” (God love Grammas), it took 2 of the other boys to bring me up. Unfortunately because the teeter-totter was probably the first piece of playground equipment put in, the board was old and I ended up on the ground with a sore bottom and lived in total shame for years after I moved to Washington and was married with kids of my own.

In fact I had erased it from my memory until this spring when a lady moving from Wyoming came in looking for a home (I work at a Real Estate Office).  As luck would have it we got to talking about our youth and discovered that she was a girl who was 2-years younger than me in the same 3-room school.

After a sharing a few good memories, a light clicked on in her eyes and she said, “Oh that’s right! You’re the one that broke the teeter-totter”…

And after all those years of repression… I didn’t have a donut at break time that day, but it didn’t help much.”

“On one of my very first days of Kindergarten, my mother sent me to school dressed in a cute, green plaid skirt held in place with suspenders.  As was the case back in the 50’s, we settled down for our mid-afternoon nap on our “personalized” towels.  As nap time came to an end, I stood up and my skirt made its way to the floor  . . . falling victim to the dreaded failed suspenders.  Consequence?  I have NEVER to this day worn suspenders again!”
