“Why an Interior Designer?”

June 1, 2008 by Shirley Bailey

Have you ever wondered why a recent purchase does not fit into your scheme of things? If so perhaps you need the services of a Professional Designer to help you with your shopping.

Paint Colors: Did you know that most homes need at least 5 tones of a hue in order to create a balanced light throughout the home. Sometimes you have “bright” rooms against “dugouts”…dark holes. Ceiling colors are crucial in order to bring your colors in harmony. Every year “Color Marketing” People in the east send information to us in order to help select colors that look to the future…rather than to the past. In order to have an overall color scheme it is necessary to coordinate the outside colors, as well as the flowers in the landscaping. Imagine!

Window Coverings: Today, many people are living in brand new, architectural mini mansions, with wonderful windows, paladins, French doors, wide panes of glass marked off into squares or plain weatherproof Bays. The views are usually lovely. Except at night when all this glass becomes a black hole. Therefore a choice of one of the many window coverings available will mitigate that as well as move away from your view completely during daylight hours.

Furnishings: Did you ever purchase a couch or a chair that you could not get through the front door? There have been sofas or beds that some staircases will not accommodate and they must be lifted by crane to the 2nd floor deck!!! There are beautiful upholstered pieces for your nest that are scaled to your space and finished in the most beautiful fabrics or leathers. It’s your choice.

Accessories: There are so many accessories available on the market today that your designer can bring your home into a beautiful coordinated setting for your lifestyle. It’s always a matter of emotion when choosing Art. The framing needs to fit into that emotion as well as into the color and style of your castle. An Interior Designer will fill the bill for you in choosing art and framing for your art or something available in the store. Anything you choose will be conservation mounted in order to prevent fading (your art will last 100 years) whether it’s a Baptismal Dress or Grandmother’s Canvas.

Trees and Screens: Once in a while a Designer will choose a large Silk Tree or a beautiful Gold or Silver Leaf Screen for your setting. This will jar you up at first. They are unusual, but in order to define different living areas they are most useful as well as bringing a design element into your place that will really bring the “Wow’s” from your guests. A competent designer will have these large items delivered to your address in order to prevent damage.

Area Rugs: In this day and age of pulling up wall-to-wall carpeting and re-finishing floors  with hardwood seems to be the choice. This, of course, calls for Area Rugs. Divine selections can be shipped to your Designer, usually within a week or 10 days (6 weeks for custom weaves) to bring warmth, softness and coordinating color into your surroundings. One of the most beautiful additions that can be made to a home. Not to mention the beautiful silk stems in remarkable blown glass arts that can grace your furnishings.

Lighting: As a general rule most living rooms require 3 to 7 lamps of various sizes, heights, and purposes. There are many lamps available that will coordinate the table heights needed as well as up lights (if the ceiling height allows torchiers) Hard Wired Chandeliers for living room, bedroom and bath. Your Designer will have a professional deliver and install your fixtures. Your Designer will deliver and place your table and floor lamps.

Installations: Whether you live in a Condo, in a steel sky rise, or a Frank Lloyd Wright Bungalow (which we have many in the Longview, Kelso area), your Designer will have access to a fully insured Pro to hang your Window Treatments, Paint your Walls, Install your Lighting, whatever.

Cost:
The services of a Professional Designer will save you money in the long run. Happy Accidents will no happen with this service. Many hours of shopping the local stores or those in nearby metropolitan areas, or even shopping the internet (have you seen some of the disappointments that can occur buying sight unseen items – TV Armoires that do not fit the room, colors not right – Curios that, on arrival, you do not like because the quality is not what you expected – Bed Sets and curtains that are of poor materials, patterns sometimes look nice in pictures but when you see the shoddy finished product you just might end up with a Designer instead).

Do it yourself?
This is a choice many feel that they do not need a Designer to do their home. Keep in mind that your home is a large investment, probably the largest you will ever make. Isn’t it worth having Fine Furniture, Art & Accessories that are will chosen and of superior quality?

Happy Decorating!
